The silver mines around Freiberg in Saxony began serious operation around the 14th century. The district is most notable to mineral collectors for fine silver minerals. The acanthite miniature shown above is one such example. Superb well formed crystals of acanthite to 6 x 6 mm in size are "draped" over a matrix of crystallized colorless quartz. The crystals show "all around" and are undamaged. Some exhibit twinning. This is a very fine Freiberg acanthite miniature measuring 2.8 x 1.5 x 4 cm in size overall. I had this one once before and have recently reacquired it. Ref: Lapis 11(7/8), 13-60 (1986).

A wonderful classic British calcite specimen consisting of a twinned gemmy colorless glassy lustrous grouping measuring 5.2 x 4.6 x 4.5 cm in size overall. The twin planes are very obvious. Neat with several non-twinned crystals present as well. Complete all around; the only damage that I can find is on the back side of the piece and that being one of the non-twinned crystals cleaved at a termination. This is hard to detect. Overall in great condition. A very choice British classic. Ex Lloyd Tate collection. Ref: Symes & Young, Minerals of Northern England (2008).

An excellent water clear colorless twinned crystal grouping of calcite measuring 8.6 x 3 x 6.8 cm in size overall. Complete all around and exceptionally clean of damage. Very fine and quite rare for this type of twinning in British calcite in this quality! Ex Dawn and Jim Minette collection #WW079 with data card. The data card notes that the specimen was previously in the Chicago Field Museum.

An outstanding glassy water clear transparent twinned calcite crystal measuring 6.3 x 5.8 x 4.3 cm in size overall. Complete all around. Very slight and minor chipping is present on some edges, typical of these. Overall this is in great condition damage-wise - the quality is outstanding and matches anything from Dal'negorsk or Egremont in terms of transparency and clarity. Ex Lloyd Tate collection. Ref: Ottens (2008) China; page 148.

A beautiful choice superb glassy reddish-brown to colorless glassy transparent twinned calcite crystal measuring 4.0 x 2.4 x 1.8 cm in size is set perfectly upon a calcite crystal coated matrix. There are several other smaller twins present as well. The left termination on the main crystal is just very slightly "rubbed" as seen in the photos; outside of this the specimen is perfect. Very showy, this is from the important finds at this mine in the late 1990's. Measures 6.0 x 5.0 x 2.7 cm in size overall and the main crystal is complete all around 360 degrees. Ref: Liu, Fine Minerals of China, pp 186-195.

Very choice pale yellow lustrous gemmy transparent neatly twinned crystals of calcite to 4.1 cm in size are set attractively upon a 5.8 x 5.1 x 3.7 cm matrix. Minor white laumontite in association. Very clean and free of damage.

A neat matrix piece for this locality! The specimen features a flat matrix plate, this mostly covered by small white laumontite crystals. Set perfectly upon this matrix is a large twinned grouping of pale yellow transparent crystallized calcite measuring 8 x 6 x 5.3 cm in size. Overall size of the specimen is 9.1 x 9.5 x 5.5 cm. This shows nicely all around and is very clean of damage. The crystals are very strange, this due to twinning. Sits perfectly for display. A superb example for this locality!

Neat cluster of twinned cerussite crystals with a little matrix. Measures 4.0 x 2.5 x 1.8 cm in size overall. There may be some microscopic chipping present, but overall I think this in excellent condition damage-wise for one of these cerussites. Fine for the locality. Ex Steve Pullman collection. One seldom sees specimens from this old locality available on today's mineral market. I visited this mine in the late 1990's to see if any specimens were available; there were extensive workings but I was told that no mining had taken place since the 1950's. There were no specimens available. This specimen consists of two colorless twinned crystal groupings of cerussite forming a cluster without matrix. Microscopic level chipping is present, but overall I think in very good shape damage-wise. These are truly rare and not often available today. Ref: Palache, C., Berman, H., & Frondel, C. (1951), The System of Mineralogy of James Dwight Dana and Edward Salisbury Dana, Yale University 1837-1892, Volume II: 258.

Price: $ 600
