Fine acanthite specimens have been known from this locality for the past several years. Rarely are the crystals super sharp. The example shown here exhibits excellent sharp cubic crystals of metallic semi-lustrous gray acanthite to 0.9 cm on edge scattered over crystalline acanthite and breccia matrix. There are at least 6 excellent crystals present; the piece is undamaged. This is very fine for acanthite regardless of the locality. Size: 7.0 x 6.0 x 4.3 cm.

From the recent finds at this locality. A fine well crystallized dullish black to gray grouping of acanthite measuring 7 x 5.7 x 2.9 cm in size overall. Complete all around and a "floater" with no points of attachment. I can find no damage on the specimen anywhere, even looking close with a 10x loupe. This is very rich and large for acanthite; the crystallized is quite neat with branching dendritic crystals. Choice.

The silver mines around Freiberg in Saxony began serious operation around the 14th century. The district is most notable to mineral collectors for fine silver minerals. The acanthite miniature shown above is one such example. Superb well formed crystals of acanthite to 6 x 6 mm in size are "draped" over a matrix of crystallized colorless quartz. The crystals show "all around" and are undamaged. Some exhibit twinning. This is a very fine Freiberg acanthite miniature measuring 2.8 x 1.5 x 4 cm in size overall. I had this one once before and have recently reacquired it. Ref: Lapis 11(7/8), 13-60 (1986).
